Stop Guessing Wood Movement: Introducing the Bad Owl Moisture Calculator

Wood Moves. We All Know It. But By How Much?
We’ve all been there. You spend weeks building a beautiful, flawless dining table. The joints are tight, the finish is glass, and you deliver it to the client’s home. Six months later, the dry winter air hits, the wood shrinks, and your flawless tabletop sounds like a gunshot when it splits right down the middle. It’s a gut-wrenching feeling.
Wood is a hygroscopic material—it constantly absorbs and releases moisture to reach equilibrium with its environment. You can’t stop it, but you can plan for it. Instead of guessing how much room to leave for expansion in your breadboard ends or floating panels, we decided it was time to do the math. Today, we are thrilled to announce the brand new EMC & Moisture Calculator feature for the Bad Owl Tool app, divided into three powerful tabs.
Tab 1: Real-Time Equilibrium Moisture Content (EMC)

Your wood's target moisture content depends entirely on where it's going to live. The first tab in our new suite is the EMC calculator, which determines the stable moisture content for your specific location.
- Location-Based Data: Use your phone's GPS or manually search for any city, ZIP, or state to get local climate data.
- 14-Day Rolling Average: The app automatically calculates a 14-day rolling average (7 days of past weather, 7 days of forecasted weather) to ensure the target reflects stable, real-world conditions rather than daily weather spikes.
- Accurate EMC Math: Using advanced temperature and humidity formulas, the app calculates the exact Equilibrium Moisture Content percentage your wood will eventually reach in that specific environment.
Tab 2: The Wood Movement Calculator

Once you know your target EMC from the first tab, you need to know how much your specific board will physically change size. Swipe over to the Movement tab, which we built around the exact math used by the pros: the USDA Wood Handbook Equation 13-3.
Here is the foundational formula governing dimensional change:
ΔW = W × C × ΔMC
(Where W is the initial width, C is the dimensional shrinkage coefficient for the species/grain, and ΔMC is the change in moisture content).
Here is what the app handles for you:
- Species Specific: Select your exact wood species (e.g., White Oak, Quercus alba) to automatically pull the correct shrinkage coefficients (Ct for tangential, Cr for radial).
- Grain Orientation: Choose between Flat-Sawn (Tangential), Quarter-Sawn (Radial), or Rift-Sawn / Mixed to ensure the math matches your actual board.
- Expansion & Contraction: Input your starting dimensions (width and thickness) along with your starting moisture content, and the app will tell you precisely how much the board will expand or shrink in inches or millimeters.
Pro Tip / Disclaimer: While this math is incredibly accurate for domestic species, remember that wood is an organic material. The calculator provides estimates based on averages. Furthermore, for some exotic species where empirical data is unavailable, values are mathematically estimated using basic specific gravity. Always leave a reasonable tolerance in your joinery!
Tab 3: The Board Tracker
If you air-dry your own lumber or want to monitor slabs in your shop, the final Tracker tab is your new best friend.
- Log Your Inventory: Create a profile for individual boards or slabs, noting the species, grain orientation, width, and initial moisture content.
- History & Trends: Log new readings over time with your moisture meter. The app generates visual trend charts so you can see exactly when your slab has plateaued, stopped losing moisture, and is finally ready to mill.
Release Dates & VIP Access
We believe in rewarding our most loyal shop members, so we are rolling this out in phases.
- Early Adopter VIP Access: Eligible VIPs get early access to the Moisture Calculator starting right now. The cutoff to qualify for this early drop is August 5, 2026.
- Public Launch: The feature goes live for everyone on September 7, 2026.
How VIP Status Works
Your VIP tier is automatically calculated based on your total spend in our shop over a rolling 6-month window.
- Silver Tier: $25.00+ spend
- Gold Tier: $850.00+ spend
- Platinum Tier: $2,500.00+ spend
We built this tool because we needed it in our own shop, and we know it's going to elevate the way you build. Stop guessing, start calculating, and let's keep those tabletops in one piece.
