Choosing a finish is often the most stressful part of a project. You’ve spent forty hours at the workbench, the joinery is tight, and the surfaces are prepped to 220-grit. Now, you’re one bad decision away from a cloudy mess or a plastic-looking film that hides the very wood you’re trying to celebrate.

In my shop, I’ve moved away from the "one-size-fits-all" approach. Polyurethane has its place, but if you want to elevate your work, you need to understand the nuances of finishes that interact with the grain rather than just sitting on top of it. Today, we’re breaking down three heavy hitters: Grand Finishes Hardwax Oil, Glancy’s No. 1, and Waterlox Original.

These aren't just different brands; they represent three entirely different philosophies of wood protection.

The Science of Surface Saturation

Grand Finishes is formulated without petroleum-based solvents, utilizing a high-quality Tung oil base. Because it offers minimal abrasion resistance, save this for heirloom boxes, instruments, and display pieces.


Waterlox Original: The Old-School Tank

When resilience is the primary requirement, Waterlox Original is the standard. This is a Tung-oil based, phenolic resin varnish that has protected high-traffic wood surfaces for over a century.

Unlike standard urethanes, Waterlox uses phenolic resins that cross-link as they cure. The initial coat provides some penetration into the pores, while subsequent coats build a tough, flexible surface film. Waterlox is a high-performance varnish that requires a 24-hour window between coats and proper ventilation due to its VOC content. It is the definitive choice for high-traffic surfaces (dining tables, countertops, and flooring) where protection is the primary goal.


The Foundation: Surface Prep for Premium Finishes

A high-end finish will only highlight the flaws in your surface prep. Here is how to sand for each of these three products:

Sanding for Hardwax Oils

Avoid sanding to excessive grits like 600. For Grand Finishes Hardwax Oil, stop at 180 or 220 grit. Sanding too high "burnishes" the wood, closing the pores and preventing the oil from anchoring effectively.

Prepping for Maximum Chatoyance

For Glancy’s No. 1, sand to 320 grit. I recommend a light "water popping" (wiping with a damp cloth) to raise the grain, followed by a final pass with your high grit once dry. This ensures the fibers are open and ready for maximum oil uptake.

Cleaning for Waterlox

Dust is the enemy of any film-building varnish. After sanding to 220, vacuum thoroughly and use a tack cloth or a rag dampened with mineral spirits. Ensuring the surface is pristine allows the phenolic resins to "bite" into the fiber for a long-lasting bond.
